Rather than defining a single model of studio provision, the lexicon presents the studio as an interconnected ecology of spaces, practices and relationships. It highlights how learning is shaped by material resources, social interactions, time for development and reflection, and the institutional structures that support educational practice.
Designed for students, educators, estates professionals, technical teams and institutional leaders, the lexicon supports more informed conversations about what enables effective studio learning and what may constrain it. It also draws attention to both the opportunities and risks of studio culture, recognising that while studios can foster creativity, collaboration and belonging, they can also reproduce inequalities and exclusions. By making these conditions visible, the lexicon provides a framework for more equitable, informed and sustainable approaches to studio education.
Organised alphabetically, the lexicon can be used as a reference guide, explored through the five research domains, or read by tracing relationships between connected terms. Part III also provides stakeholder pathways and planning prompts to support practical use. Rather than prescribing a universal model of studio practice, the lexicon offers a research-informed vocabulary for recognising and discussing the conditions that shape studio learning in different contexts.
The Studio Lexicon is organised around the proposition that the pedagogic design studio is not a single room but an ecology of spaces, practices and relations. As a noun, studio identifies a material, spatial and institutional environment; as a verb, a mode of learning through making, critique, iteration, reflection and dialogue; and as an adjective, the qualities through which an environment supports studio-based design learning.
This framing avoids separating space from pedagogy. Studio learning is shaped by the infrastructures, temporalities and atmospheres through which it takes place: critique depends on opportunities for display, iteration on continuity and storage, peer learning on access and presence, and focus on sensory conditions. The studio is therefore produced through relationships among people, practices, artefacts, spaces, technologies and institutional arrangements.
Drawing on understandings of socially produced space (Lefebvre 1991), communities of practice (Lave and Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998), reflective practice (Schön 1983) and affordance (Gibson 1979), the Lexicon uses studioness to describe the emergent quality through which an environment is recognised as supporting studio-based learning. Studioness may arise within a dedicated studio or across workshops, libraries, exhibition spaces and digitally mediated environments.
